Shouldnt your country have a happiness minister - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog
Shouldnt your country have a happiness minister - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog The UAEs minister for happiness opens the conference. I am back from Dubai where I spent 3 days at the World Government Summit along with 4,000 other delegates. One theme running through the entire event was how government policies can further the happiness of citizens. I was invited to participate as an expert in happiness at work. And the event was?REALLY fascinating. They had?many of the biggest?names in the field come and speak, including Ed Diener, Sir Richard Layard, Jeffrey Sachs and the prime minister of Bhutan where they have been focusing?the countrys development on?happiness for the last 15-20 years. Here I am with Sir Richard Layard: The closing speakers were the economist Joseph Stiglitz and Elon Musk. I am hugely impressed with the scope of the event and also with the consistent focus on how governments can focus on the wellbeing of their citizens, rather than just on economic growth. I think this is a fascinating vision for the future of public policy making. And the two are not the same. It is entirely possible to create?economic growth in a way that does not make people any happier. Here is a graph showing how GDP per capita grew consistently over a 30-year period in the UK while life satisfaction stayed flat: So shouldnt your country have a happiness minister??I wish mine did! Thanks for visiting my blog. If you're new here, you should check out this list of my 10 most popular articles. How dreaming and visualization can help your career transition -
How dreaming and visualization can help your career transition - Today, Im happy to share a guest post from my business partner, Hallie Crawford. Do you know you need a career change, but you arent sure what path to take? Hallie specializes in helping recent college grads and boomerangs identify their ideal career paths and make it happen. Hallie recently published a book targeted to singles in transition, Flying Solo. If youre single and considering a transition, I recommend you read Flying Solo for many terrific tips about what can be an unsettling, albeit exciting transition! This is an excerpt from Chapter 2: Getting Your Transition Started. Visit her site to learn more about Hallie! by Hallie Crawford, MA, CPCC Dream First, Dream Big You know the traditional image of the American Dream: Work hard and you can have anything you want, regardless of where you came from, your socio-economic status or any other aspect of your life. Well, the American Dream has changed, and the traditional way to pursue that dream is quite different. No longer is there just one work hard ethic to achieve the American Dream. And, its no longer about sticking to one career path for the rest of your life. [If you are] a single person you have even more freedom to set up your career, to break the mold, and figure out what will work for you. The process of Dreaming First will help you stay outside the box and think creatively about your career transition. Why dream first? Why turn to the fanciful side of your brain when everyone keeps telling you that a practical plan is the key to success? Because it works. While a practical plan is one of the strongest keys to success, the best-laid plans always start with the dream-a dream that you can trim and shape later to fit your real-life situation. One way to dream BIG is to use the technique of visualization. Envision how you want your career transition to unfold, visualize the pieces you want to have in place to make it happen and see all the players you need to support you along the way. When you develop your vision first, you will not only become clearer about what you want to happen, you will also be more likely to make it happen in the way youve envisioned it, and therefore be successful. Dreaming First enables you to brainstorm as many possibilities as you can imagine for living out your dream, and therefore, enables you to identify many more ways to make it happen. Two great tools for Dreaming First are journaling and visualization. Your Quick Start Tips on Dreaming First Start with a blank slate in your mind. Always act from the present and what you really want, not from past experience. Commit to making your choices as independently as possible from the voices of your past-your parents, the media, past experience, previous failures or successes, and assumptions. Throw away any preconceived notions you have about transition being hard, about not being able to have a job you love or whatever assumptions you have that hold you back. Jump into the realm of possibility. Think and act only from there. Dream journaling involves writing out the process of your career transition in an ideal light, as if it has already happened. Include in your dream journaling: 1. The time frame in which you achieved your goal-six months, one year? 2. How did you feel during this transition? Confident, clear, focused? 3. Make a list of those personal characteristics you tapped into and any new qualities you identified. 4. Where did you need extra support and where did you get it from? Dreaming Visualization Guidelines 1. First, take a deep breath. 2. Include anything you want. 3. Have fun with it. 4. If you find yourself starting to doubt what youre seeing or feeling, just let that image go. 5. Create a structure for your vision. 6. Imagine your transition complete. Now come back to the real world and take a few minutes to think about what happened. How did it go? How did you act? Answer these questions in your Career Journal. Dreaming First will continue to be an important part of your career transition. The more you use the Dream First process, the more fine-tuned your dreams become. Trader Joes How Much Do Employees Make
Trader Joe's How Much Do Employees Make When you work at a Trader Joeâs, you have to smile. A lot. Iveta Linnell, 36, appreciated the âpositive environmentâ of being an employee at the supermarket chain more than anything else. She was a crew member for five years at a Cape Cod, Massachusetts, location before leaving about a year ago to pursue a career as a registered nurse. âTrader Joeâs is Trader Joeâs because of the kind of people they hire. Theyâre mostly hardworking, and it really shows,â Linnell said. âTheyâre helpful, smiling, and enjoying their jobs. They have a great group of people.â But Mario, another former Trader Joeâs crew member who worked in its bustling Union Square location in Manhattan with an adjoining wine store, had a more mixed reaction. His duties included âsmiling too much,â he said. Mario, who also quit about a year ago, did not want his last name published so as not to harm his relationship with the company. âThere are people you work with who want to make a difference in someoneâs day at the market and then there are people who cringe at the idea that they have to find three bottles of coconut almond milk for an upset millennial,â he said. While he added that the in-store work culture âranges,â he was struck by âhow overwhelmingly nice most people I worked with were.â âWhat I always heard the most often [from customers] was, âOh, everybodyâs so helpful here,ââ Linnell laughed. âThat was the No. 1 comment.â Why people love working at Trader Joeâs Trader Joeâs has a glowing reputation, and not just among its loyal customers who seek out the storeâs cheaper prices on everything from olive oil to snacks. Itâs known as an exceptionally generous company for employees. It ranked No. 70 on the job site Glassdoorâs list of the 100 best places to work in 2018. Reviews from current and former employees tout Trader Joeâs solid pay as well as health insurance and retirement benefits that are available even to part-time crew members. Crew on average have the potential to receive a 7-10% annual increase in salary, according to the company, and get a 10% discount on all products in the stores. Both Linnell and Mario found that Trader Joeâs lived up to its image of offering relatively comfortable compensation and benefits. âI was fortunate to have a job that could give me a stable income so I could start my life here in New York City,â Mario, who had previously worked service gigs at delis and fast-food restaurants, said. âTo get health insurance and a paycheck at the same time was perfect for someone like me.â Jason Baglin restocks chips as shoppers line up inside Trader Joe's for the grand opening on 14th Street on March 17, 2006 in New York City. Michael Nagleâ"Getty Images. âI felt appreciated and supportedâ The advantages of a job at a Trader Joeâs can extend far beyond straightforward matters of pay and benefits, however. Linnell, who immigrated from the Czech Republic 14 years ago, felt that the experience was transformative in her time living in the United States. Sheâd previously worked in a convenience store, cleaning hotels, food service, landscaping, and promoting. Or as she puts it, âI did it almost all.â âI have not one bad thing to say about it,â she said of the Trader Joeâs job. âHonestly itâs been like the only job in America, and Iâve worked a lot of jobs, where I felt appreciated and supported.â The work of a Trader Joeâs crew memberâ"as opposed to a supervisor, known as a âmateâ in the company lingo, or a store manager, known as a âcaptain,ââ"is structured in a way that allows for variety. Employees rotate all tasks across a store, from running cash registers to stocking shelves and cleaning. âItâs perfect because it breaks down your shift. You donât get tired doing one repetitive thing,â Linnell said. âStrong friendshipsâ that last What might surprise the casual Trader Joeâs shopper is how tight-knit the staff is behind the scenes. Employees come from widely different age groups and backgrounds, according to Linnell, though that doesnât stop them from having conversations or forming bonds. She frequently went out with coworkers after afternoon shifts for a drink, and over her time, made âstrong friendshipsâ she continues to this day. âWhen I changed my career [to nursing], I still remained working at Trader Joeâs just for the social aspect,â Linnell said. She continued working there part-time for another year and even after that picked up a shift during one summer. . Madeline Gray/The Palm Beach Post/Zuma Press, Inc A rigid organizational structure Not every Trader Joeâs employee, of course, feels the same kind of warmth there. Mario made friends working at his store, but regarded the social atmosphere as a âbubbleâ that was constraining on his other ambitions. âMany young people, especially those in college, plan their lives around work, not just their work schedule. You see people living with coworkers, dating, marrying even,â he said of Trader Joeâs staff. âBut it can be easy to get swept up in the company culture.â And while the atmosphere might seem outwardly friendly, âYou canât have too many independent ideas for improvement, unless you want to become manager,â Mario noted. One Glassdoor review similarly comments that a con of working at Trader Joeâs is ânot being able to make effective change to organizational structure.â Other reviews complain about inflexibility in scheduling and difficult managers, both of which Mario observed. âIt is a practice of ours to be flexible with our crew members⦠It benefits us to make sure our crew members are happy,â said Trader Joeâs PR director Kenya Friend-Daniel, adding that needs for individual stores differ and that she could not comment on any one case without knowing the specifics of the situation. Managers who make six-figure salaries If you do find yourself liking a job at Trader Joeâs, it can become an exceedingly stable career. The company is committed to promoting from within its ranks, and captains can make around $100,000 a year, according to Mario and Glassdoorâs data. (The average hourly pay for a crew member is listed at $13.87 on Glassdoor; Trader Joeâs said it does not comment on salaries.) But as with any job, itâs not for everyone. âI started thinking bigger for myself,â Mario said, unless you want to move up to a managerial position. â[It wasnât] a life for me.â
