Why You Need Digital Nomads in Your Business
Why You Need Digital Nomads in Your Business Many millennials are now seeking more flexible jobs and paid holidays. However, this is not always feasible in many companies, especially if the employee is a contractor or a freelancer. For this reason, many millennials are now becoming digital nomads as they want to be able to be decision makers when it comes to the kind of jobs they want to take. Also, as mobility and travel across countries becomes more feasible, employees are willing to relocate and step out of their comfort zone. It is estimated that by 2030 the hyper-connected, tech savvy generation (millennials) will make up 75% of the workforce. But who are the digital nomads? In general, digital nomads are professionals who prefer a location-independent lifestyle that allows them to travel and work anywhere in the world. Most of the time they are freelancers in search of online jobs. In some other instances their companies allow them to work remotely. Here are nine powerful reasons you should hire a digital nomad: 1. Entrepreneurial Being a digital nomad means that they took the initiative to take risks and start a new work-lifestyle. They are motivated to start projects on their own and find the solutions to any problem that might emerge. Due to the nature which obliges them to create an income in order to travel, they will analyse any decision that might result in failure. Digital nomads are independent and have high resiliency as they know that they are on their own and any mistake or delay might cost them time and money. 2. Negotiation skills Digital nomads are in constant negotiation. From the fact that they have to market themselves in order to get online jobs, close deals online, or even bargain prices at a street market in Asia. Thanks to their constant travel, they have learned about cultural differences which are pivotal to closing contracts with international stakeholders. 3. Skills Since deadlines are part of every job, digital nomads have mastered the art of keeping up with the different time zones so their work is always punctual. Further, they have learned to prioritise work to become more efficient at what they do. 4. Creative skills They have traveled multiple destinations and the have seen many different customs that have broaden the right side of their brain. Digital nomads have learned different and creative ways to make their digital platforms attractive in order to call the attention of employers, users, or customers. 5. Technological skills Their main tool for their work is their laptop, and, in many cases, other technological devices. Technology to them is a natural talent. It is part of their survival instinct. 6. Knowledgeable As part of their digital life, they are knowledgeable about trends, world news, tax laws, local business, etc. They are a combination of a travel, political, and lawyer consultant. Digital nomads are independent and, therefore, must be aware of the current events in the world to make them more competitive. They are always well-informed. 7. Quick learners Most of the digital nomads launched their career with only one expertise skill. This has forced them to learn new skills on the road and find resources that can help them solve any issues they encounter. No matter the problem, they always seem to have a helpful approach. 8. PR skills Making yourself standout while working from behind a computer can be quite a difficult task. For this reason, digital nomads have excelled in outreaching and creating a global network. Such a network could be of great benefit to your business. 9. Writing skills As the majority of their work is dealt online, it has become essential to them to have perfect writing skills in order to convey the message they want. They have learned to send messages that are clear, personalised, and persuasive. Are you ready to hire a digital nomad? When considering hiring digital nomads it can sometimes be uneasy to understand the potential benefits they can bring to your business. It should be noted that they are professionals who have survived and created projects on their own. They have mastered and learned skills (even many skills) that a conventional employee might not possess. The following infographic by Market Inspector outlines an overview of the most popular jobs, hubs, and co-working spaces that digital nomads concur. About the author: Linda Bravo is a marketing and tourism enthusiast, currently working for Market-Inspector.co.uk, a B2B marketplace for businesses and institutions in Europe. Sheâs currently finishing an MBA at Texas AM International University and a MSc at University of Girona.

The Surprising Key to an Excellent Candidate Experience
The Surprising Key to an Excellent Candidate Experience I had the opportunity to interview Claudia Nakasone, Manager, Employment Recruitment at Childrenâs Hospital of Orange County (CHOC). She shared three practical ways to make an excellent candidate experience, as well as an unexpected key to a great candidate experience. Learning these practices will enhance your hiring process and retention rate. A California Candidate Experience With 268 open positions right now, Claudia Nakasoneâs got her hands full in Orange County, California filling positions for CHOC. So how does she keep her pipeline moving? In one phrase, candidate experienceâ"and sheâs great at it. If our phone interview was indicative of how Nakasone relates to candidates at CHOC in California, then I can verify that sheâs great at managing candidate relationships. CHOC started 2016 with 300 open positions, and in the first month Nakasone helped fill over 30 of those (10 percent). With 18 years recruiting experience, Nakasoneâs got a great message to share about healthcare recruitingâ"especially with regard to candidate experience. The Unexpected: Sharing the Good and the Bad Recruiters need not share only the good experiences, says Nakasone; hiring managers, recruiters, or HR directors need to share the bad stories to candidates during the hiring process, too. This is especially true when filling positions with non-healthcare employees. That is, if someone doesnât have a healthcare background, they need to know the negative outcomes. Why make the candidate experience great? Two major reasons justify spending time on crafting a consistently positive candidate experience. 1. Excellent candidate experience benefits the employee As Nakasone mentioned above, the candidate experience is inherently good for the candidate for various reasons. They are more likely to take the position when itâs offered, for example. But one unrecognized benefit to creating a solid candidate experience: employer benefits. Thatâs not the unexpected key, though, just an unrecognized benefit. 2. Excellent candidate experience benefits the employer If candidates have a good experience, then theyâll be more likely to give referrals after the hire, which is the type of pipeline planning that is vital to long-term growth as an organization. Nakasone also said, âPeople remember you.â She told me, further, that if they have a good candidate experience, you may not be able to hire them early in their career, but perhaps they will come back around later. Thatâs her experience with candidatesâ"they had a good experience as a new graduate, for example, and now that theyâve moved to higher levels of responsibility within healthcare, they come back around looking for employment. What else makes a solid candidate experience? In addition to the advice to share negative outcomes, Nakasone offered three keys to a positive candidate experience that produces great results not only for candidates, but also for employers. 1. Respond quickly âMake sure thereâs follow through. Because sometimes you interview and people say, âI havenât heard for weeks.â Even a day or an hour can make a difference, especially if theyâre out there actively seeking work.â 2. Connect candidates with the organization as much as possible âThe candidate experience is not just timing. Every connection with the organization needs to be positive. What I mean by that is candidate experience not only works for those who are hired, but also those who arenât hired, because they are good ambassadors for the organization.â 3. Reflect your organizationâs values and mission âThis oneâs a little bit harder to explain. Along the way, I tell candidates a little bit about CHOC, what we do here, and what we do in the community. âFor example, we have a fundraising 5K CHOC walk every October at the Disneyland Resort. I believe last year we had 15,000 people participate. So what the community is able to help us with and how candidates can be part of that as well are important to share, as is what we do for our patients.â A final word on candidate experience âDonât forget what itâs like to be the applicant and what itâs like to be on the other side. Itâs like here in the hospital, we tell ourselves, Donât forget what itâs like to be a patient, not to forget who the customer is. Who is the customer in all this? Sometimes it is the hiring manager, but it really is the applicants, those who come in contact with the organization.â [Image Credit: Shutterstock]

Five Top Tips For Effective Networking
Five Top Tips For Effective Networking Networking events can be intimidating, and are often viewed as competitive environments where an assortment of strangers work to assert their vying levels of success and charisma. For those who frequently attend such events, networking can seem like a pointless exercise in collecting business cards whilst trying not to scoff too many canapes. These misconceptions should be put aside; networking can be a brilliant way of building and strengthening connections, allowing you expand your web of contacts. Here are our top five tips for getting the most out of your networking experiences: Value quality over quantity Viewing any event in a competitive manner, aiming to connect with as many people as possible within the time frame, is a strategy doomed to failure. By spreading yourself thinly across too many people you run the risk of appearing one-dimensional, and are unlikely to get any real insight into the careers of those you speak to. Commit to building fewer, more valuable connections. Invest time in a couple of individuals, rather than skirting over a dozen. Youâll be able to form the strong basis of a couple of relationships which are more likely to be carried through to further communication. Time spent as an intermediary introducing and connecting other people can also be hugely beneficial â" should their relationship thrive they will remember your involvement, and likely be keen to return the favour. Be confident Confidence is widely viewed as attractive, with those in positions of power often exuding confidence and charisma. If you feel youâre not naturally confident, pay particular attention to your posture and body language. Adopting powerful body language is proven to effect how you behave. When taking on a âpower poseâ for just a couple of minutes the level of testosterone you produce increases, whilst cortisol (often termed the âstress hormoneâ) levels are reduced. This confident stance will therefore increase your assertiveness and charisma, improving how you are perceived within a wider group. Be careful not to confuse confidence with arrogance though. Nobody wants to spend time with an individual who believes (or appears to believe) that they are superior to those around them. Ask questions and really listen to the answers A common misconception is that networking is all about talking. Far more important than talking is the quality of your listening, a skill we never actively think to practice or refine. Many people listen simply to respond; try to engage with the material and seem interested in other peopleâs work. This will engender a far more favourable response, and will make the other person much more likely to reciprocate the effort you put in. When phrasing your questions, think about what you can get out of the interaction; spend at least a few minutes before the networking session considering what questions are most pertinent to the knowledge or connections you wish to obtain. First Impressions count In a context where time is limited, first impressions matter. Dress to impress; being overdressed will never be an issue in a networking context, but underdressing can write you off many peoplesâ radars. Perfect a strong handshake. Ensure that you donât have food in your teeth before trying to woo a future client. Work on how to open a conversation with confidence and clarity. If you have a guest list, prepare by researching the other people attending the event. This will allow you to cut through the multitudes of people to the relevant contact. And, it will give you the appropriate background to start a conversation of mutual interest. Follow up After investing time researching the other people at an event, listening carefully to what they have to say and laughing at all of their jokes, make sure that you continue to put in the effort by following up on the connection. Follow up a particularly engaging conversation about a mutual interest or debateable issue with an email. If looking for something less direct, add your new contact as a connection on LinkedIn. This will allow to view each otherâs CVs, and will establish a platform for interaction in the future. Shouldnt your country have a happiness minister - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog
Shouldnt your country have a happiness minister - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog The UAEs minister for happiness opens the conference. I am back from Dubai where I spent 3 days at the World Government Summit along with 4,000 other delegates. One theme running through the entire event was how government policies can further the happiness of citizens. I was invited to participate as an expert in happiness at work. And the event was?REALLY fascinating. They had?many of the biggest?names in the field come and speak, including Ed Diener, Sir Richard Layard, Jeffrey Sachs and the prime minister of Bhutan where they have been focusing?the countrys development on?happiness for the last 15-20 years. Here I am with Sir Richard Layard: The closing speakers were the economist Joseph Stiglitz and Elon Musk. I am hugely impressed with the scope of the event and also with the consistent focus on how governments can focus on the wellbeing of their citizens, rather than just on economic growth. I think this is a fascinating vision for the future of public policy making. And the two are not the same. It is entirely possible to create?economic growth in a way that does not make people any happier. Here is a graph showing how GDP per capita grew consistently over a 30-year period in the UK while life satisfaction stayed flat: So shouldnt your country have a happiness minister??I wish mine did! Thanks for visiting my blog. If you're new here, you should check out this list of my 10 most popular articles. How dreaming and visualization can help your career transition -
How dreaming and visualization can help your career transition - Today, Im happy to share a guest post from my business partner, Hallie Crawford. Do you know you need a career change, but you arent sure what path to take? Hallie specializes in helping recent college grads and boomerangs identify their ideal career paths and make it happen. Hallie recently published a book targeted to singles in transition, Flying Solo. If youre single and considering a transition, I recommend you read Flying Solo for many terrific tips about what can be an unsettling, albeit exciting transition! This is an excerpt from Chapter 2: Getting Your Transition Started. Visit her site to learn more about Hallie! by Hallie Crawford, MA, CPCC Dream First, Dream Big You know the traditional image of the American Dream: Work hard and you can have anything you want, regardless of where you came from, your socio-economic status or any other aspect of your life. Well, the American Dream has changed, and the traditional way to pursue that dream is quite different. No longer is there just one work hard ethic to achieve the American Dream. And, its no longer about sticking to one career path for the rest of your life. [If you are] a single person you have even more freedom to set up your career, to break the mold, and figure out what will work for you. The process of Dreaming First will help you stay outside the box and think creatively about your career transition. Why dream first? Why turn to the fanciful side of your brain when everyone keeps telling you that a practical plan is the key to success? Because it works. While a practical plan is one of the strongest keys to success, the best-laid plans always start with the dream-a dream that you can trim and shape later to fit your real-life situation. One way to dream BIG is to use the technique of visualization. Envision how you want your career transition to unfold, visualize the pieces you want to have in place to make it happen and see all the players you need to support you along the way. When you develop your vision first, you will not only become clearer about what you want to happen, you will also be more likely to make it happen in the way youve envisioned it, and therefore be successful. Dreaming First enables you to brainstorm as many possibilities as you can imagine for living out your dream, and therefore, enables you to identify many more ways to make it happen. Two great tools for Dreaming First are journaling and visualization. Your Quick Start Tips on Dreaming First Start with a blank slate in your mind. Always act from the present and what you really want, not from past experience. Commit to making your choices as independently as possible from the voices of your past-your parents, the media, past experience, previous failures or successes, and assumptions. Throw away any preconceived notions you have about transition being hard, about not being able to have a job you love or whatever assumptions you have that hold you back. Jump into the realm of possibility. Think and act only from there. Dream journaling involves writing out the process of your career transition in an ideal light, as if it has already happened. Include in your dream journaling: 1. The time frame in which you achieved your goal-six months, one year? 2. How did you feel during this transition? Confident, clear, focused? 3. Make a list of those personal characteristics you tapped into and any new qualities you identified. 4. Where did you need extra support and where did you get it from? Dreaming Visualization Guidelines 1. First, take a deep breath. 2. Include anything you want. 3. Have fun with it. 4. If you find yourself starting to doubt what youre seeing or feeling, just let that image go. 5. Create a structure for your vision. 6. Imagine your transition complete. Now come back to the real world and take a few minutes to think about what happened. How did it go? How did you act? Answer these questions in your Career Journal. Dreaming First will continue to be an important part of your career transition. The more you use the Dream First process, the more fine-tuned your dreams become.
